… And Nobody Gets Hurt

I went to the Jurong Bird Park today, over on the west end of Singapore. A lovely place! It was hot as a 70’s vintage Lava Lamp, and the usual 100% humidity. Made finding some of the birds very difficult, as they are apparently smarter than the humans; they were staying in cool places in [...] Read more »

Lazy, Hazy Singapura

For the second weekend in a row, there are no big conventions or shows here in Singapore. The morning dawned fairly clear, with some ground haze. I watched the city slowly wake up while eating yet another Omelette of Doom, washed down with hand-squeezed orange juice and lots of coffee. Even the taxis seemed to [...] Read more »

Fine Country of Singapore

The first time you come to Singapore, you’ll likely be surprised by how clean, neat and garden-like the country and city are. There are even massive growths of flowers planted along the runways at the airport! Over 4.5 million people call the island home; the nation is only a bit more than 3.5 times the [...] Read more »

Caffeine and Conspiracies

I’m now convinced there is a Great Conspiracy in progress here in Asia. All the Western-style hotels are part of it. And it has to do with coffee. The kind they put on the counter in your room near the dresser, along with the bottled water and the tea packets. It’s dreadful, freeze-dried stuff. And [...] Read more »

Mooncakes and McDonald’s

Harvest Moon in Asia means Mooncake Festival (Chung Chiu) time. I decided to spend the evening in Singapore’s Chinatown, just to see what a Chinese “Festival of the Moon” was like.
Singapore doesn’t have a big celebration of this traditional Chinese event. Not like Taiwan, where they take a three-day Holiday. I heard it’s because of [...] Read more »

This One’s for You, Tom

Dateline: Rainy , Blustery Singapore
I’m testing out a new (to me, at least) blog editor: Zoundry. I gave up on Windows Live Writer when I couldn’t keep the dang thing lit. Whenever I tried to use it I got errors, or it hung the machine up, or it just plain misbehaved. I guess I [...] Read more »

Singapore Rain and Yucatecan Heat

The equinox dawn came late, and once I got the drapes open I realized why:  Rainstorms were moving in.  Big rainstorms.  They were noisy, but not like I’m used to in Texas.  (Everything’s bigger in Texas, of course.)  I chose not to get wet and stayed indoors until the clouds had passed by.
By lunchtime things were [...] Read more »

Saturday Night in Singapore

Singapore’s tropical nature is most evident just after sunset.  All the sleepy animals come up out of their lairs, sniff the air a bit, and begin to party.  Especially on Saturday night.
I decided to join them, just this once.
I walked over to the nearest MRT station, Outram Park.  That’s right next to the Chinatown Complex [...] Read more »
