Got the Fever
Based on yesterday’s taxi ride, even the Filipinos here in Singapore are practicing their racing skills. The taxi that picked me up was a brand-new Volkswagen, very high-tech and sleek. We set a land speed record for the ten kilometers from my hotel to the International Business Park. The cabbie wasn’t talkative, but I did manage to find out that he was originally from the Philippines.
Most folks hear “Volkswagen” and think “Beetle.” This sled was something else! A Passat Wagen, small enough for Singapore streets but roomy inside. Very nice look-and-feel. Plenty of gadgets and electronics too! Time, temperature, all sorts of knobs and controls in the middle of the dashboard. I think the integrated GPSis ian interesting touch; I don’t know if that’s now an option, or if the cabbie knows his way around electronics. Looked like it was designed-in, not added.
I only had a short time to admire the vehicle. After I got out at the building and composed myself, I saw a headline on a newspaper that was being carried into the office complex. The Formula One is coming to Singapore next year! THAT explains the displays of high-speed driving skills I’ve experienced this trip. Everybody has The Fever! I guess they’re hoping to impress some visiting race team official with their expertise and dexterity in tight situations.
How do I tell them that not everybody gets a chance to be an F1 driver?
Enjoy the (High-Speed) Heat!
