Just Pho’ Me

Man, I thought I was busy in Asia. That was until I got home…

Chores, client demands and hanging issues, Wordpress upgrades, and just dealing with 11 time zones change; it’s a tough life I lead. But– I got some compensation yesterday. I had Pho.

For several years now, I’ve been on a mission to find the best bowl of pho in Austin. I’ve tried many restaurants, and these have had good bowls of noodle soup: 888 Vietnamese, Hao Hao Vietnamese, Kim Phung, Pho Cong Ly. There have also been some fairly forgettable bowls: Sunflower (their specialty is clay pot dishes, they only have one choice for beef pho), Saigon Kitchen, Pho Kim.

My favorite places boil down (get it? Boil??) to three: Pho Saigon, Pho Huang, and Tan My. Because Tan My is my wife’s favorite, we went there. She really, really had to twist my arm.

I had the Pho Tai Chin, my spouse had her favorite Vermicelli with Shrimp and Lemongrass. Healthy food at a great price, and the owner even chatted with me in Mandarin. We talked about my recent trip to Singapore, and he wanted to know if I’d picked up any tips for him while there. I had to confess, I didn’t have any pho while in Singapore! An odd oversight on my part. We talked about peppers too. He’s still looking for a good local source of Asian cultivars, but the jalapenos he uses at present are quite satisfactory. It would be nice if he could offer some Thai or Birds-Eye Chiles.

I sloshed my way out of Tan My and went back to work. Even work couldn’t wipe the smile off my face…

Enjoy the (Viet) Heat!

TC, I can get the ingredients. (One of the meager benefits of being IN civilization.) Would you like me to make up a care package for you? I could even include some Guinness…

Hmmmm. Pho. I miss it greatly, though it’s not nearly enough to lure me back to civilization.

Sure wish I could lay my hands on some spicy Indian food up here in the boonies — or even the ingredients for it…
