Friday Follies X: The Food X-Files

So the weekend’s upon us, and you want to get out of the house. After all, the honey-do list is overwhelming, the kids are hanging around now that school’s out, and there’s a whole wonderful world waiting for you out there. Of course, with gas prices like they are, you can’t go far, but maybe there’s something interesting nearby?

Have I got a festival for you!

MSNBC has a recent article listing several fascinating ways to while away a day or weekend. You know these festivals are just the thing for you, from the opening paragraph, where Eddie Lin of Deep End Dining says, “The only difference between nasty food and tasty food is one letter. That’s it.”

The list of Bizarre Food Festivals includes:

  • Bugfest, at the North Carolina Museum of Science;
  • Waurika Rattlesnake Hunt, Waurika, Oklahoma;
  • Gilroy Garlic Festival, Gilroy, California;
  • Waikiki Spam Jam, Honolulu, Hawaii;
  • Chitlin’ Strut of Salley, South Carolina;
  • Menudo Festival, San Fernando, California;

and of course everybody’s favorite, the Roadkill Cookoff in Marlington, West Virginia. I mean, them Mountaineers really know how to cook as well as party. But they don’t hold a candle to that fun-loving residents of Throckmorton, Texas, who throw the annual craze-fest that is the World Championship Rocky Mountain Oyster Festival. Bring a big appetite! I hear they slide right down…

For hot food festivals in Texas, here are a few:

I’m sure there are many others out there for you chileheads to experience. Look in your local papers, or (gasp!) Google it.

Enjoy the Heat! (And the Weird Food)
