August F-BOM: Tigers & Strawberries
It is with pride that I award the August, 2008 Food Blog of the Month to Tigers & Strawberries. I ran across this blog by accident. Well, that’s no accident, really; most of the great food blogs I read I found with that tried-and-true method. Tigers & Strawberries first caught my eye with its elegant appearance and graphics.
Then I started to really look around. Boy, I’m glad I did!
Barbara Fisher’s site is very approachable, a straightforward two-column Wordpress site with lots of color and minimal frills. And Barbara’s been at it quite a while; on activity alone she’s got over 99.9% of the web beat! Tigers & Strawberries started in January, 2005, and has been in continuous production ever since. She has about 930 posts and counting, in almost 60 categories. The links list is amazing all by itself! A regular gold mine of great reading that’ll keep you from doing any work amused and informed for months.
I have spent hours drooling over the pages of recipes; over 1,230 in all, as nearly as I can tell. (My finger got tired pointing at all the numbers and pages as they went by; I think I sprained a joint and I know I left a permanent smudge on my monitor.) Not all of them contain chiles, but every one has great, fresh ingredients and clear instructions.
Let’s be clear: This collection is bigger than most cookbooks. No, make that most recipe compendia. Shoot, it’s bigger (and I think better) than most shelves of cookbooks! Just look at some of these delectable beauties:
- Kimchi Noodle Soup
- Chinese Stir-Fry Brussels Sprouts
- Sha Cha Beef and Vegetables
- Raita with Browned Onions and Greens
- Moroccan Gazpacho
That should get the ol’ juices flowing. And that’s less than half a percent of what’s on the site.
Here’s a bonus, that makes me humble as an avid cook and food blogger: Barbara takes photos of her dishes. While cooking. Sometimes with one hand on a flaming wok and the other holding her camera. And she shares: Each recipe has several pictures with it,along with a great story.
Barbara Fisher owns and operates Restaurant Salaam; I don’t see how she has time for a blog, let alone one this nice. Kudos to her and her tenacity!
If you don’t enjoy Tigers and Strawberries, then it’s time for them to put the nails in your pine box and ship it…
