Nashville Paleta Queens Kick Bobby Flay in the Popsicle
As a kid growing up in Texas, we lived on home-make Popsicles. We had no air conditioning, but we did have a freezer and Kool-Aid. (Or at least some knockoff of that sweet beverage.)
Four kids and 100 degree days; we ate those frozen treats like Kirstie Allie stoking up for a stint as a one-woman roadblock.
One day, oh, I guess I was about ten, a classmate of mine introduced me to paletas de agua. I was ruined for life. Then I found the fruit-filled paletas, and I was even more ruined for life.
My younger siblings didn’t care for the less-sweet, fruity pops, but I found them wonderful. So now mom had to make several types.
I don’t eat so many these days, but I do still enjoy how great they taste.
Bobby Flay has a show called Throwdown, and this week I got to see him challenge the Paleta Queens in Nashville. Their shop is a local favorite, and Bobby admitted he was going into this one with little experience. He was confident, of course; ever seen him when he wasn’t? And as always, it was a big surprise to the two ladies from Guadalajara.
They recovered quickly, and they kicked some major rump. From what I could see, it wasn’t even close with the judges. Their pop wasn’t very sweet, and it had a zesty surprise: It’s made with pineapple and chiles.
I want to go to Music City now, not for the music or the gambling, but for the chile pops…
Enjoy the (Icy Spicy) Heat!
