Brew Blues: Guinness in Brew-haha With Grain Growers

Brewed adult beverages pair nicely with zesty-hot foods. What better than an ale, porter or beer to soothe the tongue and palate before digging in again?

One of my favorites is Guinness porter. It’s also one of the oldest commercial brews available; next year they celebrate their 250th year at the St. James Gate Brewery in Dublin. (Only 8,750 years to go on that lease!) I expect thousands of statisticians to make their required pilgrimage to Dublin next year, in fact.

In the meantime, seems Guinness is having a little donnybook with some of their barley growers in Ireland. Of course, the whole problem can be laid at the feet of those scalawags who united Europe:

… the grain price problem had been exacerbated in recent years by the EU’s decision to cut down on subsidized grain production, particularly in relation to the level of regulation present in the wine industry.

Something seems to be lost in translation in the news report, though:

Estimates provided by the association suggest that 5,000 malting barley farmers had gone out of business in the country over the last ten years due to payments being received for their crops.

What, the farmers didn’t want to be paid? Or was it getting paid in Euros that caused the problem? (No more free Guinness for grain…)

Enjoy the (Foamy-Headed) Heat!
