Lamb Curry

For the first time, I foud out it’s possible for me to get bored in an airport.

I know you might find that odd. Your experience is probably more typical; all airports are boring. But I love travel and flying, and I avidly watch all sorts of mechanisms that fly. It was a shock to me, though.

Even five hours in Frankfurt Airport, the port with the most international destinations served, normally wouldn’t faze me. I was a bit tired, and the seven time zones change I’d just gone through hadn’t been completely digested by my system.

I had to walk about 17 miles, it seems, from where my American Airlines flight docked and my Lufthansa lounge was located. Through several security checkpoints. Even though I was always inside secure areas, and I never went out through passport control, it seems Frankfurt is partitioned as extra precautions. With all the construction going on there, I can see why. Still, it was a bit of a pain. Walking after nine hours of flight felt good, for a while. Till my shoes began to smoke and wear out.

The Lufthansa business class lounge wasn’t very exciting either. Only part of it was open; construction again. However, they did have good German beer available for breakfast. Life sometimes has its small compensations.

About noon local we loaded up on a big Boeing 747-430 named Düsseldorf and headed out to Bengaluru. Just over eight more hours in the air. And this time, no first-class, lay-flat bed.

I still slept like a log for four hours.

When dinner rolled around we were approaching the Pakistan-India border, flying over the Arabian Sea just west of Karachi. (Don’t tell my wife, but we flew over Iran to get there.) All the dishes had an Indian flair. I chose a nice-smelling lamb masala curry.

I’m sure the chef toned the heat down for the “average flyer,” so as not to scorch their wussy little palates. It was nicely flavored, however, with rice and vegetables. I could taste the cinnamon, cardamom, chiles and other great spices. Very nicely done!

A mango pudding for dessert, and of course, on a German flight you have to have German wines. They were great, both white and red. They wouldn’t let me keep the bottle, though…

Enjoy the (Lamb Masala) Heat!
