Chicken Biryani for Lunch

Biryani

All day Saturday in the classroom, instead of playing tourist.

Oh well, that’s what I signed up for. Get the work out of the way early, then on to play! Or at least looking around.

There were compensations, however. For instance, traffic to the site was quite low, with not even one massive logjam in the eight kilometers from the hotel. A refreshing experience, if my first day was any comparison. Sometimes it takes 45 minutes or more to go that distance, and I’m not even talking rush hour.

One more nice feature: The site has a cafeteria upstairs, serving a wide variety of lunch dishes.

I jumped on the chance to try the chicken biryani. Now remember, it’s lunchroom cafeteria fare, not a restaurant. I found it nicely tasty, though. No frills, of course. The rice was properly done, the chicken was well-spiced, and there were green chiles galore. About a middlin’ scorch when all was said and done. The yogurt dipping sauce had lots of onions, and gave a nice flame reduction as required.

And the price: 48 for the meal, 12 for a liter bottle of water, and 22 for a Sunkist Orange soda in the can. A total of 82. Rupees, that is. About $2. After taxes.

With prices like these, I’ll be asking for a doggie box regularly…

Enjoy the (Cheap Biryani) Heat!
