A Day Full of Surprises in Southern India

The Karnataka State Police showed up in force at my hotel today, and they removed me from my room. Needless to say, this was a big surprise.

It all started at about four in the morning, with a simple note slipped under my door. I only know about the time because it was marked on the envelope; I was sleeping soundly about then. I saw the envelope later and opened it, thinking there would be some billing item or something.

Instead, I learned that the ruling political party of Karnataka state will be holding a “mini-congress” to celebrate their first 100 days in office. This is a regular Big Deal in India, where the populace follows politics like those long-legged white birds follow cattle (and for similar reasons). My hotel has large meeting rooms, and none of them have been used while I’ve been here; hence the sudden appearance of a rally.

The event will be a true media zoo, and the crowds are expected to be large at times. Hence the State Police. I was notified, with great sadness on their part, that I would be subjected to searches at several stages before I could get through to my suite each evening.

About 140 rooms in the hotel will be used by the Party. There will be lots of noise, late into the night. The hotel management wanted to know, could they pretty-please, with jaggery on top, move me to a penthouse suite? Just so I wouldn’t be disturbed?

I gave the idea about a New York second’s thought careful consideration, and finally, grudgingly gave in.

The management was so relieved by my noblesse oblige that they tossed in a meal voucher at their up-scale Indian food restaurant, Indian Affair. Of course, given how little I enjoy Indian food, I accepted very reluctantly. (Maybe I should have held out for an evening at Amnesia?)

Clearing out and relocating took only a few moments, with the army of helpful young men the manager assigned to the task moving about briskly. I merely stood out of the way and held onto my money and camera. They took care of the rest.

I even had time for a relaxing breakfast before leaving for work. Although I think I may have overdone the Aloo Bhaji and Sambar; is three bowls really too much?

Enjoy the (POSH) Heat!
