Goodbye Instant Noodles, Hello Spicy Italian

The end of Asian Noodles Month is upon us. Good thing it doesn’t weigh too much! Sorry, couldn’t control myself; I’ll keep my day job for now…

It’s been a fine inaugural month for an event that I hope to repeat next year, bigger and better. If you have any ideas how to improve the goings-on for next year, drop me a comment or an email and I’ll carry it all forward. I don’t think instant noodles are candidates for competitive eating, but you never know!

So, what next? I was asking myself that very question this morning as I went through my usual routine of a yummy breakfast (weak coffee and Cruncy Cheddar JalapeƱo Cheetos) followed by flying my Boeing 757-200 from Hannover to Milan, all while wearing my underpants. I do some of my best thinking while flying. For some reason, flying to Italy made me thinking of Giada de Laurentiis and some of the Italian style dishes she prepares. Some of them are fairly spicy! Oh, not spicy like Guizhou or Hunan food, or even like some Tex-Mex plates. Still, the Italians use more red pepper flakes than you might think, and they also use pepperoncini and garlic, among other zesty flavor additives. Surely there’s something in there for September?

Then it hit me, and it was a good thing the plane was on autopilot: Spicy Italian Month! Yes, the Chile Underground does it once again, declaring a Month that hasn’t ever been declared before, and we didn’t have to use any questionable language, cute animal ads or bikini girls to do it! Man, we’re just THAT good.

This will be an opportunity to explore the zestier side of modern Romance cuisine, to leave behind the same-ol’ pasta and red sauce. Who knows, maybe I’ll even ban tomatoes in the dishes! Naw, that won’t fly in my family; but I can certainly add other styles and ingredients. After all, wasn’t there Italian food before the tomato swam across from America and found its true cultural home in Italia? I rest my case.

I can assure you, no stone will remain untossed in our search for the perfect, peppery Italian dishes. After all, it’s the least we can do for you…
