In 1904, they almost closed the Patent Office because an administrator thought that everything that could possibly be invented had already been invented. Since then, of course, over 90% of everything we know about has been invented. With more to come.
Still, the thought persists that there couldn’t possibly be any truly new thoughts left to discover, or new ideas to turn into products. Especially beer. It’s been around for thousands of years, right? Certainly we’ve already used beer in every possible way.
Those silly Kiwis are proving us wrong once again. Moa Beer, in Marlborough, New Zealand, is releasing a cherry-flavored craft beer. Okay, that’s not too novel; lots of beers recently have featured fruit flavors. (by the way, the Moa is a now-extinct, flightless bird which was endemic in New Zealand until man arrived about 700 years ago. Just in case you were wondering.)
This beer, though, is being called the breakfast beer. Whoodathunk? Just that sentence alone has beer lovers everywhere slapping their foreheads. Yet Another Idea they could have had, but they didn’t!
Of course, not everybody’s in love with the idea. Then again, they didn’t have the idea either. They’re probably just raw from being scooped. Or they work for the National Addiction Centre or something. I’m guessing they won’t be in Auckland for the launch of this brew.
Sadly, I don’t think my local grocer will be stocking Moa. Of any flavor. So I’ll have to find some substitute. I wonder if Shiner makes a cherry beer…
