MOED: Berberi, a Universal Holiday Seasoning

So your Christmas holidays are getting boring these days, eh? You don’t have any food traditions, you just keep eating the same stuff every year. Turkey, check. Ham, ho hum. Green Bean Casserole? Yeah, and even though there’s never any left, it’s still the same ol’ casserole your great-granny used to make and serve.
What you [...] Read more »

Month of Eating Dangerously: Curried Stuffed Potatoes

Okay, I didn’t want to start out too boldly here. I’m kind of a “rush into things slowly” sort of guy at times. So I chose an easy recipe; one you can hit over the fence on the first swing, with your eyes closed. And it’s not that spicy, unless you want to make it [...] Read more »

Thanksgiving Twist: Curry Fruit Salad

I’m cranking on the novels, and I reached a bit of a dead-end. Low blood sugar or something. Happens late in the day, when one has spent the whole day cooped up with felines and pushing keyboard keys. The low blood sugar thing got me to looking for some fruit, which got me to thinking [...] Read more »

The Secret of Ras el Hanout: There Is No Secret (Trust Me)

Morocco is an exotic place, a land of unique peoples, cultures and dishes. Their spices, and the way they use them, are part of the mystique. Anyone who has learned a bit about Moroccan food knows something of the spice blend called Ras el Hanout. However, what most folks don’t know (at least not here [...] Read more »

First Day in DC: Asian Spice and Chemists

Sunday afternoon I traveled to Washington, D.C. to meet up with my summer research students. They are presenting a poster at the American Chemical Society’s Fall Meeting, covering their fifteen months of undergraduate research efforts at their school, Texas Lutheran University. I get to go along and snicker make snide comments assist in my own [...] Read more »

Ireland, Day One: Clontarf, The Sights of Dublin, and Messrs. Maguire

We deplaned in a light drizzle at Dublin Inernational Airport, a bit tired and very excited. Clearing immigration in Dublin was a big hassle, though. They’re reworking a lot of the terminal, and space is cramped. We had to queue for almost an hour. Seems several other big planes landed about the same time we [...] Read more »

Friday Follies: Really Hot Pizza, and a Sinful Feast (For Your Eyes)

Like many Americans, I love pizza. I like to make my own, which is maybe not the norm these days. I also like to go to good pizzerias and get a fresh pie now and again.
However, I’m not a pizza snob. I don’t know the real difference between Chicago style pizza and New York style; [...] Read more »

Morning-After: What’s a Good Cure for a Feasting Hangover? Flying…

The post-feast roistering lasted into the wee hours. Beer and wine in appropriate quantities actually help me stay up late. Grad school training, I suppose. (Does this mean I’ve still got it?)
Getting a few nice presents helps too, like Flight Simulator X (with Acceleration Expansion Pack) and a Saitek ST290 Pro Joystick. I stayed up [...] Read more »
