MOED: Orange Chicken With Plenty of Heat

The Month of Eating Dangerously continues! Even though cold weather has hit us in central Texas, we’re still using our grills. (We enjoy tennis year-round too; just don’t let any Yankees in on our secret.) Here’s a grilled chicken dish that has just enough punch to make the MOED list:

Smokin’ Hot Orange Chicken

Okay, it’s really [...] Read more »

Fish 4 Friday: Zesty Grilled Shrimp with Roasted Pepper Aioli

Shrimp are strange little creatures. They spend their whole life crawling around on the bottom of the ocean, scavenging anything they can find. They eat anything, as if they’re the chickens of the sea (Sorry, Charlie)…
No, wait. Wrong blog! This is the food thingie, right? With chiles and all? Got it. I was momentarily confusing [...] Read more »

Hot Hot Hot Fourth!

Yessir, folks, it was hot… (How hot was it?)

The cows and goats were taking turns waterboarding each other.

The chickens were laying hard-boiled eggs.

We discovered that asphalt has a liquid state.

The trees were whistling for the dogs.

All the water spigots were giving boiling water.
We had to put sunscreen on the front porch.

We cooked our steaks mediuim-rare [...] Read more »

Pineapple Pork Chops

Our family loves pork, especially chops. I’m always on the lookout for new recipes and flavor combos to make pork “interesting.” Okay, interesting isn’t the tiebreaker; they’ll eat chops almost any way you can fix them, and they have some old favorites that never lose their interest.
Still, there’s nothing wrong with having a couple hundred [...] Read more »

Saturday Salmagundi for Memorial Weekend

It’s Memorial Day weekend, the official start of summer; a time for reflection and remembrance. Also, a time for food! So stop by those roadside stands and get some vittles, then fire up those grills…
If you’re not sure about grilling, check out this article on how to master your grill. Get prepared so you don’t [...] Read more »

Tis the Season: Hearty Party Fare

Now that we’re safely past Thanksgiving week we can forget about eating, right?
Wrong. It’s party season!
School parties, work socials, you name it. You’ll probably have to suffer through go to six or more parties in the run-up to Christmas. More if you have children, or belong to any clubs. You only get out of some [...] Read more »

Spicy Steak: Tenderloin with Poblano Cream Sauce

Tenderloin steak is the queen of beef, in my opinion. (Sirloin is king, for me.) Every now and again I get a huge hankering for tenderloin on the grill.
Problem is, it’s always the same: Marinate, wrap with bacon, season and scorch. That’s it. Meat the Real Man way, minus the stick. Boring.
I won’t ever have [...] Read more »

Texas Renaissance Festival: Hot, Cool, Spicy

Yesterday the family and a select group of friends traveled to Plantersville, TX to visit the 34th Annual Texas Renaissance Festival. (That’s 35 years continuous running, every Fall!) This year the Festival runs every weekend from Oct. 11th through Nov. 30th. The RenFest is held in a large, private park about six miles south of [...] Read more »
