After Thanksgiving: Two Spicy Soups From Leftovers

The relatives came over and you fed them. Oh, you ate too! If you’re like me, you “tested” everything regularly before it found its way to the overloaded tables for the Big Meal. Then you ate again, just to be sociable; you ate so much that your I.Q. dropped to somewhere below your shoe size, [...] Read more »

Review: Mesa Rosa Mexican Restaurant

When my wife and I moved back to the Republic after completing our “missionary work” (four years in purgatory proselytizing to the heathens in the wilderness of Michigan, up near Santa’s house somewhere), we lived for a short while way out northwest of the city. We were actually in Williamson County, and a long drive [...] Read more »

Restaurant Review: Casa Garcia’s Tex-Mex Restaurant

I’m a big fan (don’t take that too literally!) of Tex-Mex cuisine. Maybe “cuisine” is too snooty a word for these tasty, hearty dishes. It’s the cooking of working men and women, with few pretenses and no plan to grow up into a “cuisine.”

Friday Follies: Beer Baths and Busted Babes

Anybody who hangs around the Chile Underground even the tiniest bit knows I’m a fan of beer. But even I never considered bathing in the stuff! Welcome to [...] Read more »

I’m Not Here Right Now; But If I Were, I’d be Eating…

I just went back to school.
Not to get a degree; I got more of those than I need. And my teaching is over (at least for now).
This time, it was to launch daughterperson on her college career.
It only seems like yesterday she was eating her birthday cake. Her first birthday, I mean. And now she’s [...] Read more »

Smoke and Fire: A Special Salsa

(Just one quick post and then we’ll be back to Iyer’s “660 Curries.” This post is in honor of my research team at Texas Lutheran University; it’s been a great summer!)
I’ve had salsas of all kinds over the years, growing up in Texas. I always enjoy the roasted ones the best. Some people don’t try [...] Read more »

Happy “Birthday” Chile Underground! A Visit to Matt’s Famous El Rancho

Everybody’s having birthdays these days. It’s so fashionable that I hear some folks celebrate one every year! Imagine that.
Matt’s Famous El Rancho just celebrated 56 years of serving great Mexican food here in Austin, for instance. I had lunch there today to help them celebrate. Well, okay; not to help them celebrate, exactly. I was [...] Read more »
